A fire broke out at Dhaka’s New Supermarket — next to New Market — on early Saturday.
A total of 28 firefighting units and teams of Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force are working at the spot to control the blaze.
A total of 17 people, including eight firefighters, have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after they fell sick from the heavy smoke.
The hospitalised people include Bayjid, 25, Shah Alam, 20, Limon, 28, Kamal Hossain, 33, Rifat, 23, Toufik, 24, Rashed, 22, and Shanto, 24.
12 Border Guard Bangladesh units are also working at the spot.
The fire broke out at about 5:40am and was still not under control while filing this report.
Shahjahan Sikder, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters media cell said that the first firefighting unit reached the spot at about 5:43am.
